Kamapuaa vs. the Mac Mini White Screen of Death

So after my venerable linux box shuffled off this mortal coil last month, I decided that it was time to get a new system for work. After looking through newegg.com for a while, it struck me: I *hate* PC hardware. With this in mind, I headed down to the local Apple retailer and picked up a shiny new Mac Mini.

After some initial transition pains (mainly involving the screen and keyboard sharing software synergy), I had about a month of userland bliss. Then one day, I came in to work and was greeted by a white screen.

Oh dear.

Long story short, I was unable to boot the system. I tried powering it off, all the key combinations I could think of, and even booting from the install media. Nothing. Just an unrelenting sea of white on my monitor. Not even the boot tone/chime/whatever. To make matters worse, my install media was now stuck in the superdrive.

Although I had declined Applecare for this box, I was still well within the one year hardware warranty, so I called the local authorized repair center. Their tech seemed to recognize the symptoms immediately, and let me know that he believed that I had a dead hard drive. This didn't seem right to me (shouldn't I be getting the blinking question mark?), but I decided that I'd drop it off anyway.

Lo and behold, with a new hard drive I'm back up and running. I managed, after a long phone call with Apple, to retain the original drive. Just in case anyone is wondering, it's a Seagate Momentus 5400.6 320GB.
